"I am going to change the world, but I am going to start with me."

This is what I learned today in Bogota. I saw it posted on a classroom wall.

I visited two public schools: Aquileo Parra and I.E. Distrital Usaquen. Students in Colombia are learning all about peace which is especially relevant since a peace agreement was just signed last year between the Colombian government and FARC (a left-wing guerrilla group).
What I observed at both schools is thoughtful young people who care about a better world. I
listened to Daniel (a 6-year-old) talk about how he resolves conflict. When he gets mad at a friend or his brother, he takes some time to think first, and then he tries to find a solution. I also listened to a group of 4 sophomores speak passionately about their Model United Nations where they learn about diplomacy, international relationships, and the United Nations. All of them mentioned, in one way or another, that change begins with oneself.
What made the biggest impression on me is that Colombian teachers and administrators found it more important to stress this particular aspect of their educational system to a group of American teachers. I wondered if a select group of Colombian teachers came to Arizona, what aspect of our educational system would we stress? I think I know.
